Throughout my career in HVAC&R, one thing has become clear: our industry’s strength lies not only in the knowledge we share, but in the connections we build.

At AIRAH, I see this in action through conferences, industry events and professional initiatives that bring people together to exchange ideas, share expertise and build relationships. These connections often extend far beyond the event itself, sparking collaboration, opening doors and creating opportunities for growth.

I’ve experienced the value of this support firsthand. Leaders and colleagues at AIRAH have encouraged my development, shared their knowledge and given me opportunities to take on new challenges. I’m particularly grateful to our Chief Executive, Sami Zheng, for her trust and support in helping me grow professionally and broaden my contribution to the organisation.

Having people who recognise your potential and back your growth can make a lasting difference. It’s a reminder of the importance of paying that support forward and creating opportunities for others.

We all have a role to play in building a more connected industry. Whether it’s introducing two people, sharing knowledge, encouraging an emerging professional or making space for a different perspective, small actions can have a lasting impact.

For me, the true value of connection lies in what it makes possible: new collaborations, unexpected opportunities and the confidence to take the next step.

As we recognise Global HVACR Women Week, I encourage everyone to look beyond their usual networks, share their experiences and help others find their place and potential within our industry.

One conversation can open a door. Together, we can build a more connected, inclusive and collaborative HVAC&R industry.

Local voices. Global connections. One HVACR community.

This article was contributed by Marie Karekla for Global HVACR Women Week 2026, taking place from 25–31 October.

It forms part of our Local Voices series, in which women share their experiences of working in HVACR and the connections that have made a difference along the way. By sharing these stories, we hope to help others find people they can learn from, exchange ideas with and support.

What connection has made a difference to you? We welcome contributions from women across HVACR, wherever you work and whatever stage of your career you have reached. Your story does not need to be long or polished—a simple experience could help someone else take their next step.
